Men and women with afro-textured hair are particularly prone to suffer from traction alopecia, a form of hair loss caused by the constant pulling that comes with woven or braided hairstyles. In the past, this has been a source of severe discomfort and perhaps embarrassment that may appear to have no solution. Fortunately, advances in hair transplant technology have enabled us to perform highly effective afro-textured hair transplants in our NYC office, with astounding results.

Afro-textured hair and traction alopecia

The thick and tight curls of afro-textured hair lend themselves to unique and beautiful hairstyles, including Bantu knots, braids, cornrows, cane rows, and poetic justice braids.

Unfortunately, these hairstyles come with a significant disadvantage: they continuously pull at your scalp. Over time, this pull can damage your hair follicles and result in hair loss – a condition called traction alopecia.

This type of hair loss often begins for men and women as early as their 30s and continues as they age, resulting in high use of hats and wigs for many as they reach the 30s and 40s.

Hair transplant methods for afro-textured hair

We offer two distinct methods of afro textured hair transplantation, each of which is ideal for different hairstyles and conditions:

  • FUE transplants: FUE transplantation is a method where individual follicles are removed from a donor site on the back of your head and then transplanted to the target area. FUE transplants leave very tiny and practically invisible scars and are ideal for those with short hairstyles.
  • FUT transplants: FUT transplantation is the more traditional method where a donor “strip” is surgically removed from the back of your scalp. While this does leave a more visible scar, this method is much faster and enables us to perform a more comprehensive transplant. FUT transplants are ideal for those with longer hairstyles, as long hair easily covers up the scar.

Am I a candidate?

Anyone with afro-textured hair that suffers from hair loss is a likely candidate for an afro-textured hair transplant. Whether you suffer from genetic hair loss or hair loss from your hairstyle choices, we can help. Ideal candidates are those who:

  • Aren't pregnant or breastfeeding;
  • Are in generally good health; and
  • Don't smoke.
