While too much alcohol can be harmful to the body, enjoying the occasional glass of red wine may not be a bad thing. In fact, there have been several studies done to confirm that red wine offers many health benefits.
Heart Healthy? Red wine is packed with antioxidants and resveratrol which have been found to reduce the risk of heart and cardiovascular disease. Even a glass a day can benefit you, but too much of a good thing doesn’t work either, especially alcohol.
Brain Health? Resveratrol, found in the skin of red grapes, has been shown to protect against Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
Cancer Fighting? Studies have shown that drinking 4 or more glasses of red wine a week may reduce a man’s overall risk of prostate cancer by up to 50%. For women, red wine has been shown to lower the risk of breast cancer. That said, moderation is key as 1 or 2 alcoholic drinks per day appears to increase the risk of breast cancer in women. With 1 glass of red wine per day, the antioxidants and resveratrol in red wine can also help protect against lung cancer.
Lower cholesterol? While resvertrol has many healing properties, including lowering LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, red wine also contains saponins which also have cholesterol lowering properties.
